Introducing boomsatsuma's brand new...

FILMMAKING POST-PRODUCTION BA (Hons)

Learn key skills in all aspects of the film industry. This course aims to enable you to reach the professional standards required by employers. Alongside practical, theoretical and industry-standard technical skills, there will be a real focus on working professionally, collaboration, and communicating ideas, all of which will be fundamental to your employability once you graduate.

This course has been created with direct input from boomsatsuma’s industry partners in television and film – all of whom will be actively engaged in its delivery. You'll learn in small and intensively taught classes, and will specialise in one of two pathways – Production or Post Production – throughout your three years on the course.

BA (Hons) Filmmaking is taught at boomsatsuma in Bristol, which became a UNESCO City of Film in 2017 due to its extensive production and media culture in television and film.

Course Structure

Year one

You'll take a combination of introductory modules on process, scheduling and post production, as well as story and narrative, film history and context. There are two principal areas of emphasis. The first is to provide a grounding on the fundamentals of cinema and the storytelling process, with an understanding of narrative structure, scriptwriting and editing. The second is to combine introductory technical skills in sound and edit, with professional skills in budgeting, managing, organisation and production coordination.

Year two

This year's focus is on both factual/documentary and non-factual/fiction production. In-depth modules cover post production skills (grading, VFX, online graphics, soundtrack lay).

You'll post produce short documentaries and drama films. Additional creative and work experience modules (which provide you with opportunities to work in areas relevant to your pathway) aim to build specialist creative skills to help you in your career.

Year three

The final year of study is structured around independent learning, leading to the development of major projects and separate project portfolios. These include online portfolios, websites, showreels and specialist submissions, along with one or more graduate films, developed as group projects.

Opportunities

You'll learn by doing, actively working on at least one project at all points of the course. Each project is designed to develop different sets of skills; from learning how to tell stories at screenwriting stage to re-telling them in the edit, and from designing and building a physical filmset to shooting and VFX-ing a greenscreen one.

You'll work on large crew studio shoots and smaller crew documentary style filmmaking, and learn scheduling for both film shoots and post-production. This combination of projects will give you hands-on experience across the extensive filmmaking process.

You'll be taught through a mix of large, combined teaching groups, smaller pathway sessions and opportunities to work on your own in specific modules.

Research and context will be integrated into all practical modules, facilitated by in-house staff and visiting lecturers.

Teaching sessions will combine lectures/seminars and workshops across a cinema, seminar space, film studio, post production suites and a break-out space for more informal relaxed discussion.

You'll be given the opportunity to attend field trips, including The Berlin International Film Festival and The International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, for example.

Each of these is a three-day trip that includes screenings, talks, and a visit to a film museum.

Work placement opportunities may include working with companies such as Films@59, The Bottle Tard Studios, BBC Bristol and Channel 4.

This course prepares you for entry level roles in post production, including areas such as editing, colour-grading and visual effects (VFX).

You'll develop transferable skills in digital technologies and storytelling, and the projects you'll work on during the course will lay the foundations for success in your professional life. You'll learn to work with others in teams on a range of complex processes, to competing deadlines. Our aim is that when you graduate, you'll be better equipped to understand and manage complexity in the workplace.

Final year modules focus on tangible outcomes: graduate films and a body of research, which can form part of your portfolio when you graduate – demonstrating your abilities.

Facilities include purpose-built digital editing suites, including a dedicated grading suite. Software includes Avid Media Composer, Pro Tools, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro.

You'll have access to professional filmmaking equipment, including high-end production cameras. Lighting and sound kit is available to students both on and off-site.

Interviews for the 20 spaces available on our course start from 1st September 2020.
